The .308 caliber has become one of the most popular and most used ammunition in the United States. The .308 has been used in many military and police settings, but where it has carved out a place for itself is in the hunting community.

The .308 can provides enough velocity and stopping power to drop a large game at extended distances. While the cartridge is up to the challenge, the user may need a little help executing shots at 100+ yards. Luckily, the market is full of optics that will pair well with the .308 and allow you to take full advantage of the cartridge’s ballistic properties.

In this article, we are going to look at five of the best scopes to pair with your .308 chambered hunting rifle. By the end of the article, you should have an idea of a scope that will pair well with your hunting style and hunting situations you commonly encounter.

What do you need in a .308 scope?

Durability and Construction

Any scope that is going to be used for hunting purposes needs to be durable and able to withstand the common bumps that come along with being in the field. Scopes constructed from aircraft grade aluminum not only offer this type of durability, but they are also lightweight.

Another feature to a good hunting scope includes low profile turret adjustments. You still want to be able to adjust them easily, but low profile adjustments tend not to get snagged in brush or get knocked off as easily.

If you’re taking a scope out in the field, you also need a scope that is water and fog proof. There is nothing more annoying than having a fogged up lens when trying to line up a shot. All scopes on this list have gone through weather proofing processes.

Holds Zero

While the .308 caliber is not the heaviest hitting caliber available, it still produces a good deal of recoil. You need a scope that can withstand the shock of recoil while maintaining its zero.

This not only includes the scope itself, but also high-quality mounting rings which will keep your scope secure. Having a scope that you are confident in it’s accuracy round after round can only improve your ability to hunt.

Fixed or Variable

Scopes can be grouped into two categories, fixed and variable powered. Fixed scopes only have one magnification settings while variable powered can be adjusted over a range of magnification powers.

What you want on your rifle is going to depend on where you hunt. As we mentioned, the .308 is a versatile caliber that is used in a variety of hunting situations. In some cases, you might want a fixed over a variable powered scope.

A fixed scope around 3, 4, or 5X is a great option if you are using your .308 chambered rifle in densely wooded hunting areas. In these situations, shots taken over 100 yards is rare. Why not just set you variable powered scope at a lower setting then? Well, fixed scopes are often cheaper and more durable than variable powered scopes simply because there are less moving pieces. If you don’t plan on taking long range shots and are stomping around in the heavy brush, a fixed scope might be a better option.

The .308 has the velocity to reach out several hundred yards and still have the knockdown power to drop a game. If you’re hunting game where you are going to have to reach out to some extreme distances you are going to need a variable scope. A great all around variable scope is 3-9X, but if you really need to get out to 300+ yards, you might want to look at scopes with magnification power up around the 12X+ range.

You need to keep in mind what the lowest magnification setting is on the scope you are looking at purchasing. While most hunters focus on how far they can shoot, you need to keep in mind what happens when a deer steps out at 60yards? Do you have a low enough magnification with a wide enough field of view to acquire the target and make a clean kill?

Eye Relief

As we mentioned earlier, the .308 does not have horrible recoil, but there is some kick to it, especially depending on the grain of the bullet. Because of this, you do want a scope that will give you 3 or more inches of eye relief. This is a comfortable distance between your eye and the ocular lens rim and when the scope is mounted properly, you shouldn’t have to worry about a nice case of scope eye.

5 Best .308 Scopes On The Market 2017

#1. Leupold VX-1 3-9X40 Riflescope

This variable powered scope will function well carried in heavy forested areas for shorter shot distances and is also great for reaching out on shots further than 200 yards.

It goes without saying with Leopold, but this scope is durable and will hold up to years or normal abuse that is often associated with hunting. It is made from aircraft grade aluminum and only weighs 11.2 oz for a really lightweight riflescope. It is not the most compact scope at 12.6”, but for a hunting rifle, you do not need extra space along the top rail for other accessories.

We really like the low profile windage and elevation adjustment turrets that won’t get knocked off or hung up when wading through some heavy brush in the field. These turrets can be finger adjusted, and both use 1/4MOA finger clicks. Both can be adjusted up to 52MOA.

The sight picture on this scope is bright and clear, and you will be more than satisfied with its performance in low light conditions. This image quality can be attributed to Leupold’s lens coating technology which utilizes several different coatings for optimal light transmission and glare reduction.

The BDC reticle (duplex) is easy to use in low light conditions and makes it extremely easy to put the target in the crosshairs. Both a general duplex reticle or a duplex with elevation adjustment markings are available.

This scope offers generous eye relief with an FOV of 34.6 to 14.6ft. This is also an extremely affordable scope that performs well above its price range, a rare quality in rifle optics worth purchasing.

#2. Nikon Buck Master II 4-12X40 Riflescope

The Buck Master II by Nikon is an extremely compact and durable scope that pairs well with any .308 chambered firearm. It is a versatile scope that can aid in a wide range of shots at varying distances and hold up to the normal bumps and dings equipment go through in the field. This scope also offers more long range shooting with a max magnification of 12X.

The Nikon Buck Master II uses a BDC duplex reticle. This scope also features a quick focus eyepiece for a clear reticle and picture. The lenses have been coated to allow maximum light transmission, up to 98%, for a clear and crisp image even in lower light environments. The Buck Master II has generous eye relief at 3.7″.

The turrets are a low profile and are also zero resets. While they will not get knocked off zero easily, they are also easy to adjust when in the field. You will be able to send a lot of rounds downrange with the Buck Master without having to constantly re-sight your scope. The turrets feature 1/4MOA click adjustments that are easy to manipulate while lining up a shot.

Like any good hunting scope, this one is very durable and has been nitrogen purged and sealed for a water and fog proof scope.

This is a no-nonsense riflescope that will perform well in a wide range of hunting scenarios with your .308 chambered firearm. It will also not be near as big a hit on your wallet than other scopes that perform similarly.

#3. Bushnell Banner Dusk & Dawn Riflescope

If you have any experience hunting, you understand that a lot of kill shots are taken in low-light settings. Most deer are moving in the early morning hours and late afternoon when shooting light is low.

The Banner Dusk & Dawn Riflescope from Bushnell is the ultimate answer to making these shots easier. The scope is a 4-12X variable power with a 40mm objective lens.

The lenses are coated using a unique DDB technology that increases light transmission, clarity, and brightness during low light settings. The Multi-X reticle is designed for easy visualization in low light settings and allows you to line up shots on target in the early and late evening hours.

This scope offers comfortable eye relief at 3.3” and also features a fast focus eyepiece. This scope has an incredible field of view from 29-11’ at 100 yards.

The windage and elevation turrets feature 1/4MOA finger click adjustments for easy adjustments in the field.

This scope is made from a single piece tube for extra durability and is also water and fog proof. All three are features needed in a hunting scope.

This is an extremely affordable scope that helps solve the problem of shooting in low light conditions.

#4. Nikon M-308 SF 4-16x42mm Riflescope

If you want a long range hunting scope, the Nikon M-308 is an option you should seriously consider. It has a variable magnification power between 4-16X.

This scope features high profile tactical style turrets. While maybe not ideal for hunting in heavy brush, the high profile style is nice for easy maneuvering in open spaces where long range shots are taken. It also features 1/4MOA click adjustments for both elevation and windage.

This scope features a BDC duplex reticle that has elevation adjustment markings. What makes this scope perfect for .308 cartridges is the elevation markings are rated for .308 caliber bullet drop settings which makes those extreme distance shots much easier to estimate.

This scope functions well in low light conditions. The lenses are multicoated and help maximize light transmission through the objective lens. This includes an ultra-clear coat that aids in the 95% light transmission. The objective lens is 42mm which helps a lot of light move through to the ocular lens.

This scope features up to 4″ of eye relief with a field of view from 25.2 to 6.3′. This eye relief is incredible and will pair well if you need to use a more powerful .308 cartridge to reach out at increased distances.

This scope is filled with nitrogen gas and sealed with o-rings in key areas on the scope to give you a water and fog proof scope.

The scope is slightly on the heavy side coming in at 19oz, but it’s a heavy duty scope that will hold its zero extremely well and is shockproof.

#5. Leupold FX-II 4×33 mm Scope

Not all scopes for hunting need to be variable power and allow you to take shots at 500yds. In fact, a lot of shots taken while hunting will be 150yds or less, especially for whitetail deer where the .308 is very popular. Because of this, we wanted to include a fixed power scope.

The Leopold FX-II 4X33 Riflescope is an excellent scope for hunting in denser hardwoods where whitetail is prevalent. Like most fixed scopes, this model is very rugged and can take a beating without losing function. Like all Leupold scopes, the FX-II is made from aircraft grade aluminum, and this adds to the scopes light weight, which is only 9.3oz.

This scope uses a simple duplex reticle that tapers from thick to thin postings at the crosshair. This scope also uses Leupold’s multicoating technology which gives incredible light transmission and picture quality. The coating system along with the blackened lens edges helps cut down on glare and light reflection on the objective lens.

This scope is both water and fog proof, and it also holds up extremely well to recoil produced by a .308.

The windage and elevation turrets are low profile and can be adjusted up to 80MOA. The field of view for this scope is 24ft at 100yards and also has an eye relief of 4″. Once again, this is a fantastic scope for whitetail hunting in denser woods where long range shooting is not needed, and high magnification is unnecessary.

The .308 has always been a favored hunting caliber in the US and will most likely continue to be for the next several decades. The .308 is highly versatile and can be used in a variety of hunting and shooting situations.

Because of this, you need a scope that will pair with your hunting and shooting situation. There are a number of rifle optics on the market, and we have listed and discussed five scopes that cover the spectrum where a .308 chambered firearm is used. We hope that you take advantage of these products and use them to be more successful in your future hunts.

There is something special about being out on the field with the bird dog working to jump pheasant and quail. The combination of your hunting partners, the terrain, and the smell of shotshell powder all culminate into a hunting experience that is steeped in tradition while still maintaining a fresh and modern hunting excursion.

A lot goes into hunting these birds. Training the dogs, scouting the fields, and preparing your hunting outfit all to take time and experience to become proficient.

In this article, we are going to take a look at a couple of pieces of gear that will make your upland bird hunting experience even more memorable and successful. We will also look at some tips that will help you limit out on quail and pheasant more consistently.

The Outfit

Upland bird hunting doesn’t require all that much gear. In reality, all you need is a shotgun and some ammo, and you have the capacity to take down birds, but there are several pieces of clothing and gear that will make doing so much easier.

The Shotgun

Obviously, the main and most important piece of equipment is going to be your shotgun.

The gauge you use can vary. While the most popular are the 12 and 20 gauge, there has been a resurgence in the 28 gauge. For pheasant, the 12 gauge is the go-to weapon as you can use shells that will reach out at further distances.

Regarding chokes used for quail, you won’t need anything shooting a tighter pattern than a modified. If you think you will be on top of birds when they flush you might even go with an improved cylinder for a wider pattern.

For pheasant, it depends more on how far out the birds are flushing. Modified is a good go to choke for single barrel guns while you might go with a tighter pattern such as a full choke in your second barrel to gain a little bit more distance if using a side by side or over-under.

While any shotgun type is capable of bringing down these birds, you might consider weight above all else. Hauling a 12-pound pump around for twenty miles might work for the first ten, but those last ten are going to be miserable.

A lot of Upland bird hunters utilize the over-under shotgun. The reason is the lightness as well as the ability to utilize two choke styles as well as different loads for the first and second shot.

The Shells

The most common shells loads used for quail are 1oz 71/2 to 8 shot. These loads have more than enough power and distance to drop a quail. For pheasant, you might want to go up in the shot range to a 1 or 11/4oz 5 or 6 shot. A lot of it is personal preference and what you feel more confident in using.

The Vest

The hunting vest is invaluable while in the field. Not only does it provide extra storage for shells and gear, but it also serves as a visual safety feature and a means to carry your birds comfortably.

#1. BadLands Upland Hunting Vest

This is one of the newer designs of bird vests that are now on the market. This vest by BadLands cuts down on material and is great for those early season hunts where the temperature can still heat up during the day.

It is lightweight and features hunters orange for safety. It can easily be worn in all weather conditions and can be adjusted to fit over cold weather gear.

It features enough storage space to easily carry a full box of shells comfortably along with other gear with its nine pockets. It is also designed to carry a 2L water bladder without sacrificing storage space.

Also important is the removable and waterproof game bag that can carry multiple pheasants and can be removed and easily cleaned when the hunt is over.

#2. Browning Pheasants Forever Vest

This is also an extremely lightweight hunting vest that is also very rugged and durable for trekking through dense brush and undercover. It is woven from polyester and features a blaze orange shoulder padding and game vest.

It features two large front pockets that have elastic shell holders and can easily carry a box of shells comfortably. It also provides further pocket space with two zippered pockets.

The game pouch is blood proof and easily cleaned. It also features wide openings for easy, one-handed access.

#3. Gamehide Gamebird Ultra-Light Vest

This is a great and simple design for a bird hunting vest and is very affordable for those looking for a durable starting vest. It features cutouts in the high heat generating areas and is a perfect vest for warm weather bird hunting. It uses a light, but durable material that will stand up to tearing and block puncturing from small thorns and briars.

This vest features large button pockets that hold shells and other gear comfortably. It also features a blood proof game pouch that can be easily accessed.

The Pants

I hope you don’t ever end up in the field without a good pair of brush pants. When you chase after these birds, you often find yourself wading through briars and thistles. Without the proper pants, you can become miserable quickly.

#1. Under Armour Prey Brush

These brush pants by Under Armour are some of the most comfortable hunting pants that are available for purchase.

They use a DWR finish making these pants extremely stain and water resistant and is an important feature for walking through brush with early morning dew.

These brush pants use a cotton canvas with nylon overlays. While these materials are excellent wind protection, they are not the best brush pants to wear while in extremely heavy and thorny brush.

#2. Browning Upland Chaps

Full briar pants tend to be uncomfortable for most hunters. Chaps are an excellent alternative and allow you to wear your favorite hunting pants while adding extra protection from thorns and briars.

These chaps utilize a cotton canvas with a thick briar/thorn resistant overlay. These chaps adjust for the perfect fit and are extremely easy to put on and remove quickly.

The Boots

Often, hunting for upland birds means putting in quite a walking miles. Not only do you want boots that are comfortable, but you also want boots that are much lighter. Just a few ounces taken off the weight can make a difference in that last field you walk for the day.

#1. Wood N’ Stream Kangaroo Boots

These leather hunting boots feature dual density polyurethane soles and are one of the most popular hunting boots for Upland Birds. These Kangaroo boots made from kangaroo leather instead of cow leather with the former being lighter and more durable. These boots are extremely lightweight and only weigh in at 22oz each!

Not only are they light, but they are also durable and provide comfort and stability to your sole and ankle. These boots are water resistant and also feature an abrasion resistant toe guard.

While these boots are higher on the price range, you will not need another pair for years to come, and they offer every feature a hunter looks for in their hunting boots.

#2. Irish Setter 808 Wingshooter Upland Boots

Irish Setter boots are a well recognized and respected brand of hunting boots. Their Upland boots use high grain leather that is durable and waterproof.

These are also lightweight hunting boots, but near as light as the Kangaroos. They also feature an excellent soft sole that makes long walking periods much easier on the foot.

The shaft of these boots measure 8.5” and provide plenty of ankle support while in the field. The sole also offers a lot of traction and perform well even in slick conditions.

Now that you are outfitted with the proper equipment, it’s time to take a look at several key hunting tips that will help you locate and flush birds more efficiently and give you ample shooting opportunities.

Quail Hunting Tips

Unfortunately, a lot of areas in the US is experiencing a decline in quail population. We hope that many wildlife programs that are putting programs in place to bring back this beautiful bird will be successful and future generations will be able to experience this hunt as those before us.

Hunt into the Wind

Quail rely on their hearing to escape predators. By hunting into the wind, you reduce their ability to hear you coming and flushing before you are in range. This tactic benefits your hunting dogs by giving them a better chance to catch the bird’s scent well ahead of their hiding spot.

Quail Habitat

Weedy fields that have natural growing plants and vegetation are excellent cover and provide seeds that quail feed on. Well-maintained pastures and crop fields do not provide the necessary cover for these birds and hunting them will be a waste of time and energy.

Areas that have natural borders such as cover fields next to wooded areas or fields surrounds by natural hedgerows, or fencerows are excellent places to find a covey. Overgrown hedgerows or ditches are also funneled that the birds will use to move from one area to the next and are great places to find some birds.

Leave that Covey Alone

This tip is especially important for hunters in areas where the quail population has been declining in recent years. There are not many things as satisfying as having a covey of 20+ birds flush right in front of you, especially if it has taken several miles to find them.

It can be easy to take a few birds in a covey and keep going after them. Perhaps there was a time where this was not detrimental to the population, but it is now. If you jump a covey and drop a few birds, you need to start thinking about heading to a new area. If you continue hunting that covey and kill 10 out of the 20, you have doomed the rest of them.

Right Place at the Right Time

Quail do not remain in the same area throughout the day and keying in on areas at the right time will improve your success. They usually roost near overgrown fields in shrub thickets and move into these fields to feed early in the morning.

Your best chance of jumping quail during mid-afternoon hunts will be in more wooded areas that will offer the birds more cover. In the late-afternoon quail will migrate back to fields to feed and get ready to roost for the night.

Pheasant Hunting Tips

Work with a Team

You can work an area much more effectively when there is a team of hunters. You can cover a wider area faster put a lot of shots on birds turning down the line, and drive birds to blockers at the end of the field. Having a couple hunting dogs can also be extremely helpful.

Food, Shelter, Water and the Right Time

To increase your success, you need to work areas that are more likely to hold birds. Pheasant will roost in medium height grass fields, but will not hold there long.

They will move from the roost to feeding fields at first light making roosting fields a poor choice to hunt. Cut corn, sorghum, and soybean fields hold feeding pheasant during early morning hours and make spotting birds easier.

As the day progresses, and when there is heavy hunting pressure, birds will move to heavier cover. Overgrown grass fields with a heavy brush are excellent hunting areas from late morning to mid-afternoon. In the afternoon the birds will move out from their cover to feed before returning to their roosts.

These birds also need water. If there has been a dry spell hunting fields or cover near a water source can be an effective tactic.

What about the Snow

Pheasant season often runs into months where snowfall is possible. A snow covered field should not deter you from hunting, and you can still hunt pheasants effectively.

Pheasants tend to stick tight in the snow in very heavy cover, and it will nearly take you stepping on the to get them to flush. Cover ground slowly in these conditions and hit thick areas more than once.

Hunt into the Wind

When possible, it is best to work a field with the wind in your face. When a pheasant rooster gets up, it can move fast. If you add his speed with the wind to his back, he is going to be out of range quickly.

When flushed they are either going to turn and fly parallel to your position and eventually turn upfield of you, or they are just going to turn upfield. With the wind coming towards you, it slows down their acceleration and gives you a few extra seconds to get off some shots.

Too many hunters tend to leave the upland birds well enough alone and focus more on the big game. Upland birds and the big game should not be compared, but instead looked at as two completely different hunting skill sets and experiences. One is not better than the other.

We hope that this article has provided some great gear options that will make long days filled with a lot of miles more easy to endure.

We also hope that out tips on locating and flushing both quail and pheasant will lead to hunts ending with a gull bag.

Happy Hunting!

The post Best Over-Under Shotguns For Hunting 2017 Reviews appeared first on My HuntinGear.

If you ever find yourself in the field on a dove hunt or some upland bird species such as grouse, partridge, quail, or pheasant you might notice that a lot of bird hunters are utilizing over-under shotguns.

So what are the reasons that so many bird hunters go to the over-under instead of pumps, semi-autos, or side by side double barrels?

There are quite a few reasons, and we will examine each of them, but I think the biggest reason is because of personal preference.

There is nothing wrong with going with any other type of shotgun, and you can be successful with whatever style you choose.

I want to make it clear from the beginning that this article is not being written to crown the over-under as the king of shotguns, but simply to point out some benefits and why so many hunters enjoy them, especially when in the field flushing birds.

So, back to the original question, why do so many hunters use the O/U shotgun? A few that come to mind include;

  • Ease of maintenance/cleaning
  • Can utilize two different chokes
  • Can utilize two different loads
  • Lightweight
  • Beautiful design
While you might only have two shots at a bird, the lack of a magazine and consequently ejecting and chambering rounds means less moving parts. This makes O/U shotguns much easier to maintain, they tend to malfunction less frequently, and they are easy to break down and clean.

O/Us were designed to have a light swing weight and be able to be whipped into shooting position almost instantly. Even with a heavier over-under, the design seems to swing the gun up into shooting position effortlessly. It’s an important component with birds flushing all around you.

These shotguns are ideal for bird hunting because you can use two different styles of chokes. One choke might be a less focused pattern that will give you a wider coverage for birds when they flush early and are at a closer range, while the second barrel might use a denser patterned choke that can reach out to birds you missed with the first shot.

As you become more proficient with the over under, you will be able to switch barrels when the birds flush, and you judge their distance.

Not only can the chokes be changed between barrels, but so can shotshell loads. With a little experience using an over/under in the field and you can have a shotgun outfitted to match your hunting style and cover you in any bird situation.

Unfortunately, a lot of over-under shotguns can be in high in the price range. The fact is, they are worth it for their lightness and fast swinging barrels that can put the bead on an escaping covey of quail or a rooster taking flight.

Though most hunters would not admit it, I believe one of the biggest factors that draw bird hunters to over-under shotguns is the sheer beauty and feel of them. There is nothing quite like breaking down a shotgun or admiring the intricacy of some of these weapons. A lot of O/U shotguns walk a fine line between a hunting tool and a family heirloom and quite a few function as both.

So, let’s take a look at several O/U shotguns and discuss their specs and handling.

5 Best Over-Under Shotguns For The Money 2017 Reviews

CZ Drake

This over-under is a Turkish import and will be the best bang for your buck. While it runs more than half the price or less than most of the shotguns discussed here, it still performs well in the field.

The Drake is available in 12 and 20 gauge models, but we will focus on the 12 gauge.

This is a basic over-under design with no frills, but it offers durability and reliability which are the two most important aspects of any hunting firearm.

Five different screw-in chokes come with the Drake including a full, improved modified, modified, improved cylinder, and cylinder.

The stock of the Drake is a beautiful Turkish Walnut with a satin finish and laser cut textured gripping surfaces.

The recoil pad is left wanting, but if you need extra padding from shooting loads used for upland birds you might be better served with a 20gauge or springing for better replacement pad.

The receiver and barrel have a gloss black chrome finish. The barrels are chambered for max 3″ shells.

The Drake features an extractor ejection mechanism, so you are not going to get the speedy reloads that are associated with higher end over-under shotguns and will have to remove spent shells by hand. Of course, some hunter’s prefer this type of ejection system so I wouldn’t consider it a pro or con. Just a personal preference.

The Drake features a single selectable trigger for which chamber fires first along with a manual tang safety (on top of the firearm behind the receiver).

The gun is 45.75″ in overall length and has a 28″ barrel and weighs in at 7.4lbs.

It has a nice swing weight and handles well in the field, especially when working thicker brush with a snag free fore end design.

The Drake is going to be one of the more affordable, but still effective over-under that is available and it a great option for those not quite ready to splurge for a high-end model.

Weatherby Orion

The Orion over-under shotgun by Weatherby is slightly higher in price than the Drake but still affordable for those looking to purchase their first O/U shotgun.

The Orion has fantastic balance and swing weight that rivals the high-end over-under shotguns. It also features automatic ejection system which is favored in the field where a lot of shots are happening quickly.

The barrels are chrome lined to help reduce fouling and rusting as well as make them extremely easy to clean and maintain.

The Orion has a high grain, walnut stock with a high gloss finish. The fore end and pistol grip also utilize “Prince of Wales” grip designs cut into the wood and handle well in wet conditions.

The Orion comes with three chokes including a full, modified, and improved cylinder and is chambered to handle up to 3″ shells.

Its weight comes in at 7lbs making this a fantastic over-under for extended trips into the field. The ventilated top ribbing helps keep the weight low and ends with a brass bead sight.

The Orion comes in models featuring either a 26 or 28″ barrel though the difference in the two hardly affects the shotgun’s overall weight.

The overall length of the weapon will vary between the two models with the 26″ barrel model having an overall length of 43.75″ and the 28″ model coming in at 45.75″.

The Orion has a manual tang safety that also includes a barrel selector. The mechanical trigger functions in a way so that even if the first barrel does not fire, the second chambered shell is still able to be discharged.

The Orion features a great barrel locking system that should not require maintenance for several years.

The Orion is an affordable O/U shotgun. Though it still fetches for close to a grand, it provides a lot more of the features that are found in high-end weapons.

Beretta 690 Field I

The Beretta 690 Field I is a higher end O/U shotgun, but man does it perform and looks good doing it.

It is available in a 26, 28. And 30” barrel model. The Field I only weighs in at 7.3lbs. While this weight is not the lightest model on our list when maneuvering from holding to shooting positions it almost feels weightless.

Regardless of the model, the Silver Reserve II has an excellent locking mechanism that is durable and will hold up through years of use. It also breaks down smoothly.

The Field 1 has a very slim profile and can maneuver in the field as well or better than any other over-under available. This shotgun can go from pointing downwards to snapping up into a shooting position, and it feels feather light doing it.

The Steelium (steel alloy) barrels provide high and consistent accuracy. They are machined to fit with Beretta Optima-Choke HP. The 690 Field I is chambered to handle up to 3″ shotshells.

The stock is made from some of the finest grade wood. It is hand oiled, Turkish Walnut stock and fore end with checkered gripping surfaces that are good enough for you to handle the gun in slick conditions.

The Field one also features a 20mm recoil pad that fits well to the shoulder and absorbs the brunt of the recoil.

This is a tight locking over under shotgun with a robust and efficient ejection system. Like any well made over under, shells are not ejected when not discharged and can be hand removed.

The Field I features a top tang safety system with the barrel selector built into the safety mechanism.

This is a well-designed over-under shotgun that looks, feels, and performs as well or better than any other. This shotgun is easily worth the couple grand you would have to shell out to own one, but through a hunter’s eyes, I can’t think of a better investment.

Browning Citori 725 Field

The Citori Field produced by Browning is another high end priced over-under shotgun, and it is well worth the money.

The Citori Field uses a checkered Walnut stock with a glass oil finish that looks very regal when paired with the silver nitride finished receiver and polished blue steel barrel.

The receiver has a nice, low profile and balances well with the stock, fore end, and barrel to give it great maneuverability and light swing weight. It also features a ventilated top rib that leads down to an ivory bead site.

It also utilizes a gold-plated, mechanical trigger in the case of the first barrel failing; the second can still be fired. The trigger pull on this shotgun is very light and smooth and also features a silver nitride guard.

While most might overlook this when it comes to shotguns, it comes in handy in the field, especially when the days get a lot colder and your finger seems like a brick.

The barrel length for the Citori Field is 26″ with an overall length of 43.75″. The weight of this O/U is approximately 7.4lbs. The firearm also comes with a full, modified, and improved cylinder chokes.

The Citori Field has a chrome plated chamber that can handle up to 3″ shells.

This O/U shotgun features an incredible and comfortable recoil pad that absorbs the majority of force generated by the gun. Like most over-under shotguns, it features a tang safety with a barrel selector.

Mossberg Silver Reserve II

The Mossberg International Silver Reserve II is a mid- priced break action O/U shotgun. Like most Mossberg shotguns, the Silver Reserve II is available in a variety of models. It is offered in 12, 20, 28, and .410 gauge.

Like the rest of the article, we will focus on the 12 gauge. With the 12 gauge, you can purchase a 30″ or 32″ barrel option as well as an extractor or ejection type chamber.

The overall length ranges from 47.5″ to 49.5″ with a weight of 8.5 to 9lbs. As you can see, it is a full 1- 2lbs heavier than the other models on the list.

It’s not necessarily a bad aspect to this weapon as some hunters might like the feel and handling of a heavier shotgun. Even though it weighs a little more, it still moves incredibly well in the hands, and unless you are walking 50 miles a day on a multi-day it shouldn’t make that much of a difference.

The Silver Reserve is chambered to take up to 3” shells. Both the chamber and the barrels are resistant to fouling and corrosion due to the chrome lining.

The Silver Reserve comes with five screw-in and extended barrel chokes including a full, improved modified, modified, improved cylinder, and cylinder.

This Mossberg uses a vented top rib system with dual fiber optic sights. It also utilizes a tang safety mechanism with a barrel selector switch.

The blued steel barrels pairs well with the silver receiver and black walnut stock and fore end that have a satin finish. An interesting feature with this over under shotgun is the ported barrels. This porting system was designed to help reduce recoil. Pairing the ported barrels with the thick recoil pad, you have an over-under that absorbs a good percentage of the recoil.

Over-under shotguns provide a lot of performance characteristics that make bird hunting a lot easier. While we may not drop a bird, it won’t be the shotgun’s fault.

I hope that this article has outlined why an over-under shotgun is a useful tool when hunting upland birds. And while a few of the shotguns mentioned are more than most of us would like to spend on a weapon I hope I have adequately explained why they run for what they do and why they’re worth it.

I would venture to guess that there are very few hunters who have handled an over-under when busting birds and have ever reverted to any other shotgun. That’s the power these shotguns hold over us, and most are all the happier for it.

You might be thinking that there are plenty of other calibers just as effective at dropping whitetails, so why the extra attention for the .308?

In this article, we will take a look at the origins and properties of the .308 caliber to determine why it is so popular with whitetail hunters as well as examine and discuss five of the best rifles that chamber the .308.

By the end, we hope to have persuaded you as to why the .308 deserves its own article.

So, let’s take a look at the .308.

The .308 Rifle

The origins of the .308 caliber date back to the 1950’s with the production of the 7.62×51 NATO round to be used with the M14.

While issues plagued the M14 in the field and were quickly replaced with the M16, ammunition manufacturers in the states saw the positives the caliber offered and began producing today’s .308. And it has remained a staple for the US deer hunter.

What the .308 caliber has become over the years is a fantastic all use caliber that can take down just about any game animal, including whitetails.

So what exactly about the .308 makes it such a popular caliber for deer hunting?

For starters, ammunition for the .308 is also readily available from multiple manufacturers and in a multitude of grains and bullet designs that allow you to have the perfect cartridge for hunting situations you plan to put yourself in.

The .308 for hunting purposes is most often used in heavy wooded areas or shots that occur within 250 yards. Both are characteristics of most whitetail hunts. At these ranges, the .308 has incredible stopping power and accuracy. In the distances, most shots are taken for whitetails, and there is not a caliber that outdoes the .308 regarding accuracy.

The heavyweights of the .308 give it fantastic stopping power at ranges withing 250yards. For the majority of whitetail hunts, shots that bring down deer almost never get out of this range, so a flat shooting long range caliber is not needed.

.308 calibers are also known to have manageable recoil. While most hunters do not mind a little kick, the reduction of it with the .308 makes the second shot much easier to line up and take if the first shot does not land.

There are also a huge amount of rifles that are available in chambering for the .308, giving you a lot of options to pick a rifle that will fit your hunting needs and leads us into our list for the best .308 deer rifles.

It would be near impossible for us to pick out the best rifle chambered for a .308 to bring with you out into the woods. There are just too many great options.

What we can do is look at five of our favorite models and discuss what makes them the perfect instruments for hunting and deadly accurate with a .308 caliber cartridge.

Even picking just five is a tall task, but here are five deer rifles chambered for the .308 that we feel would be worthy of taking out on any whitetail hunt and will bring home the meat.

This firearm has an overall length of 38 5/8″ with a 20″ barrel. The barrel length for the 783 is a few inches shorter than other barrels on this list and might reduce its accuracy at a distance slightly, but for most shots taken in the whitetail woods, the difference would be negligible.

The 783 has a carbon steel barrel with a matte blue finish. The nylon fiber, the synthetic stock has a matte black finish, and the total weight of the gun comes in at 8.25lbs. Two sling studs are molded into the stock making adding a sling to your gun simple with no extra mounting required.

For a centerfire, at this price, it has incredible accuracy and groupings at 100 yards. Its consistent accuracy comes from the double aluminum pillar making the barrel free floating.

The Crossfire trigger allows you to adjust the pull weight, the trigger seems a little heavy, but nothing too egregious.

This is a deer rifle that anyone can afford. Though inexpensive, it performs admirably in the field and can find a place in anyone’s hunting arsenal.

Ruger American Rifle All Weather

The model chambered for the .308 is available in both left and right-handed orientations and has an overall length of 42” and weighs in at 6.1lbs.

The American rifle comes out of the box with a patented Ruger adjustable trigger that allows you to adjust the pull between 3-5lbs. The trigger on the American Rifle is incredibly smooth with little creep.

While not available with a pre-mounted scope, a one piece lug bolt also comes mounted on top of the receiver for easy scope ring attachment.

The safety on the American Rifle is a tang style design on top of the gun directly behind the receiver for easy and natural engagement or disengagement when preparing for a shot.

The Ruger American Rifle All Weather model is a rugged and lightweight firearm that is great for carrying into heavy woods or hunting trips where you will be covering large distances and encountering harsh conditions that put a lot of stress on your firearm.

The Trophy Hunter XP employs a three point tang safety mechanism. There are a bolt and trigger lock setting, trigger lock, and open setting. The extra safety setting can be extremely useful when out in the field.

Kimber Model 84M Classic

Kimber is known for producing lightweight firearms, and the 84M Classic bolt action rifle continues this tradition.

The 84M Classic model is 41.25″ in total length with a 22″ stainless steel barrel and receiver. It has an FDE composite stock with textured gripping surfaces.

This rifle weighs in at only 5lbs 10oz! The lightest rifle on our list. The 84M model is not available in left handed action orientation although it is so popular that many left-handed shooters will still deal with this inconvenience.

This is a controlled feed action with a Mauser claw extractor that pulls rounds from a 3 round removable metal box magazine that sits flush with the stock.

A high grain .308 cartridge with such as light rifle has a pretty noticeable kick as one would expect, but the 1″ thick rubber recoil pad does a good job at absorbing a good portion of energy.

For a higher priced rifle you expect and deserve incredible accuracy and performance. Kimber guarantees groupings of .99″ or less at 100yds. That’s a tall order, and the 84M Classic can deliver. The tight fit of the components and free floating barrel all contribute to its accuracy.

The 84M Classic uses a classic bolt wingtip, three position safety. Some hunters love the placement of this safety while others prefer a tang safety system. Regardless of your preference, it is an easy to adjust and reliable system.

Kimber is getting close to the upper price range of deer rifles, especially when compared to other rifles on this list, but it is well worth the price. If you like hunting light and killing deer, the Kimber 84M Classic is a perfect fit.

If you want a caliber that is known to bring down any whitetail, the .308 is your answer.

Of course, there are other calibers that will do the job, and we are not saying the .308 is the only choice.

A lot of hunting choices come down to personal preference. The rifle, the camo brand, the cartridge, the scope, etc., etc., etc.

What can’t be disputed are the properties and effectiveness of the .308 caliber for hunting whitetails and a variety of other game animals.

The .308 caliber will only be as effective as the rifle that is propelling it downrange towards your target. There are many excellent rifle options out there and a lot of bad firearms that would hamper your ability to be a predator for whitetails.

We hope that this article has both explained the reasoning behind the popularity of the .308 as a whitetail cartridge as well as provided you with five of the best deer rifles available for using the .308.

Don’t just take our word for it. Gear up and see the effects of the .308 for yourself in the whitetail woods.

Happy Hunting!
